Loose bodies in the shoulder are pieces of torn tissue that float around the shoulder joint, and in turn cause irritation, pain, swelling and locking.
Over time, loose bodies grow as repetitive layers of fibrous and cartilaginous tissue are deposited. Older loose bodies exhibit multiple layers of fibrous, cartilaginous, and even bony tissue.
The loose bodies can cause pain, clicking or locking of your elbow. Your elbow may get ‘stuck’ and then click free (unlock). This is often painful. Sometimes you may feel something moving around inside your elbow joint and be aware of the loose body.
Loose bodies are typically removed arthroscopically — that is, with the aid of a small camera. Loose tissue is suctioned and removed. The results of this procedure are excellent. Most patient’s experience rapid recovery, improved mobility and greatly diminished pain.
