The labrum is a thick tissue that surrounds the shoulder socket that deepens the joint. The labrum can be damaged or torn by trauma to the shoulder joint. The labrum also becomes more brittle with age, and can fray and tear as part of the aging process.
Symptoms of a labral tear depend on where the tear is located, but may include:
Because the rim of the shoulder socket is soft tissue, the doctor may order a computed tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. In both instances, a contrast medium may be injected to help detect tears. Ultimately, however, the diagnosis will be made with arthroscopic surgery.
Dr. Woodworth may prescribe anti-inflammatory medication and rest to relieve symptoms. Rehabilitation exercises to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles may also be recommended. If these conservative measures are insufficient, your physician may recommend arthroscopic surgery.
In addition, the treatment of a torn labrum depends on the type of tear that has occurred. Most labral tears do not require surgery. However, for patients who have persistent symptoms despite more conservative treatments, surgery may be necessary.
