The human body changes with age, and it’s frequently not for the better. Your knees are among your most important and frequently used joints. If your knees ache when you perform even the most mundane tasks and you have already gone the physical therapy, injections and medicinal routes, it’s time to think about knee replacement surgery.
The office of Woodworth Orthopedics and Sports Medicine is skilled at the diagnosis and treatment of all orthopedic issues. We provide the highest quality of skilled and compassionate orthopedic care. We care about your health as much as you do.
When doctors started performing knee replacements (called arthroplasty) in the early 1970s, the implants were good for about 10 years. But they last for two decades now. If you have arthroplasty, you’ll be one of the 600,000 other annual patients in the U.S.
An orthopedic surgeon takes out the knee’s damaged area and replaces it with a joint made of metal, ceramic or plastic. The artificial joint is then attached to the thigh bone, shin and kneecap using an acrylic cement.
Osteoarthritis, which creeps up on people as they age, is the chief culprit behind knee replacements. The cartilage that’s the pad between the bone joints and the knee disintegrates. Other medical conditions include rheumatoid arthritis (the body’s immune system assaults and demolishes the knee’s lining); physical deformities such as bowed legs or “knock-knees” (the knees’ positions must be changed); a broken bone; and torn ligaments.
If the mere thought of doing something as commonplace as walking your dog, going out shopping, or going up or down stairs makes you cringe, know that a knee replacement can help you move more easily and without the dread and anticipation.
The five main kinds of this surgery are total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, cartilage restoration, patellofemoral replacement and complex (or revision) knee replacement. The orthopedic surgeon will tell you which type you need.
