An estimated 600,000 knees get replaced in the U.S. each year. That’s why potential patients should be aware that there are five types of knee replacement operations. 

1. A total knee replacement is the most common kind. The surfaces of the thigh bone and shin bone that connect to the knee are replaced. 
2. A partial knee replacement is performed only on patients whose knees have sturdy ligaments and normal cartilage. Partials require incisions that are smaller than totals. 
3. Patellofemoral replacement surgery addresses only the underside of the kneecap and the hollow in which the kneecap sits. This method can be very good for people who have chronic arthritis of the kneecap.

• Complex (or revision) knee replacement might be needed for those with extremely bad arthritis or who have already had two or three replacement surgeries. 

• When a knee is worn or has been injured in only a solitary area, that area can be replaced by a living cartilage graft or cells that morph into cartilage.
